Today, Scottish Labour Leader, Richard Leonard MSP, raised the failures of the SNP Government to address poverty and inequality and heed the stark warnings form their own Poverty and Inequality Commission to progress their income supplement quicker and move their approach on inclusive growth from beyond a concept to an approach that results in real change in people's lives.
Richard Leonard said:
"While the Government has been delaying the income supplement, child poverty in Scotland has continued to rise. While the Government has been offering up concepts, out in the real world, more people are queuing up at foodbanks."
Speaking to Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, Richard Leonard raised the IPPR analysis for a Child Poverty Action Group report, published yesterday, which concluded that the greatest reduction in child poverty relative to cost of any single option is achieved by addressing the two-child cap.
He said: “Deputy First Minister, will the government at long last think about its moral responsibility, will you finally use your powers to protect families in Scotland from the two child cap, or do you still think, John Swinney, that families should be left to suffer in order to avoid ‘letting the Westminster Government off the hook?’
