Commenting on reports that the Scottish Food Coalition has organised a letter calling on the SNP government to fast track the Good Food Nation Bill and enshrine the right to food in law, Scottish Labour MSP Elaine Smith said:

“It is a national scandal that foodbank use continues to rise, year after year.

“That shouldn’t be happening in 21st century Scotland.

“Scottish Labour believe that there should be a statutory right to food enshrined in law to ensure a joined-up approach across Government, so it’s very welcome that the Scottish Food Coalition have organised this letter calling for this to be taken forward.

“I hope Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP government will listen and act urgently to bring legislation forward – if they won’t, Scottish Labour will.”
