Labour's plan to scrap Universal Credit will benefit over half a million households in Scotland, new figures show.
Labour announced its intention to scrap the scheme last month. The botched roll-out, compounded with Tory social security cuts, has left families unable to pay bills and at the mercy of pay-day lenders.
Offcial statistics show that there are 91,184 households in Scotland already enrolled in Universal Credit.
There are also 471,485 households still receiving the "legacy" benefits which Universal Credit is replacing.
In total, 562,669 households in Scotland would be placed on Universal Credit under Tory plans.
Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said: “Labour is the only party that can and will scrap Universal Credit.
"This will benefit over half a million households in Scotland, many of which have been forced into in-work poverty by the Tories.
"Scrapping Universal Credit will be the first step in building a social security system that supports a fair and compassionate society, and does not seek to penalise those in the most need.
"It's just one example of how a socialist Britain can offer so much more than a separate Scotland could."
