Scottish Labour will today propose to the Scottish Parliament that the policy of Universal Credit be abolished in Scotland and the UK and the two-child limit and benefits cap scrapped with it.
By the time Universal Credit will be rolled out fully across Scotland in 2023 it is projected that close to 600,000 households in Scotland would be at the mercy of this punitive policy.
But a UK Labour Government would scrap the policy - starting with immediate action to end the two-child cap, rape clause and punitive sanctions regime.
Stating Scottish Labour’s opposition to Universal Credit Scottish Labour Leader Richard Leonard said:
“Since Universal Credit was first introduced in 2013 we have seen thousands of vulnerable people and families in Scotland and across the UK put under immense financial and psychological strain.
“ The policy of Universal Credit does not alleviate poverty but exacerbates it.
"We cannot stand by while more and more people slide into poverty and deprivation due to this horrendous policy.
“While the SNP denounce in words the policy of Universal Credit their actions, or lack of them, have been to fail to mitigate the damage done to the people of Scotland on Universal Credit by the two-child limit and the morally abhorrent rape clause.
“In contrast Labour will set about abolishing Universal Credit entirely, in Scotland and throughout the UK, and lead thousands out of poverty with a new, humane welfare system.
“Labour will scrap this disastrous policy because Labour is on the side of the many, not the few.”
